NATIONAL LENTIL FESTIVAL TO BE HELD IN PULLMAN, WASH.

PULLMAN, Wash., Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The fifth annual National Lentil Festival will be held Saturday, Aug. 28 in Pullman, a small college (Washington State University) town 75 miles south of Spokane, the Pullman Chamber of Commerce announced today.
The National Lentil Festival celebrates the lentil, a legume that grows like a pea but is smaller, flat, lens-shaped and 5 to 7 millimeters in diameter. The festival begins with a Lentil Pancake breakfast and hosts throughout the day a 5K run, fishing derby, parade, microbrewery tasting, arts and crafts fair, antique and collectables show, old-time harvest festival, Ronald McDonald magic show, little lentil King and Queen contest and live entertainment. Last year more than 5,000 people attended the festival, including Speaker of the House Tom Foley, who served as grand marshall of the parade. The major attraction of the festival each year is Lentil Lane, featuring such lentil foods as lentil pizza, lentil burgers, lentil chili dogs, lentil enchiladas, lentil cake and even lentil ice cream.
According to Victoria Scalise, domestic marketing director of the USA Dry Pea and Lentil Council, Pullman is located in the heart of the lentil-growing area and virtually 100 percent of the lentils produced in the United States are grown in this northwestern region because of the ideal combination of sun, moisture and soil. Lentils are a major export crop with up to 80 percent being sent to other countries. Approximately 135 million pounds of lentils are produced each year. Lentils have been served on global tables for thousands of years and have provided important life-sustaining nutrients to people from ancient times to the present. Lentils are a great source of nutrients including fiber, carbohydrates and protein. Food professionals refer to this tasty little legume as "the food of the 90's."
