NATIONAL GROUP TO HONOR WRITER FOR DAILY NEWS.Byline: John Huddy Daily News Staff Writer Jean Russell Vogel, a former Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. resident and a columnist columnist, the writer of an essay appearing regularly in a newspaper or periodical, usually under a constant heading. Although originally humorous, the column in many cases has supplanted the editorial for authoritative opinions on world problems. for the Daily News, will be honored today by the National League of American Pen Women. The award is given every two years by each Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, branch to recognize accomplishments, community service and participation in the organization. ``This is a way of showing what kind of outstanding thing is being done by someone in the branch,'' said Diantha Ain, incoming president and chairwoman of the Women of Achievement program. ``Over the years Jean has done some of the nicest things that a journalist could do,'' Ain said. ``She went way above and beyond the call of duty.'' Vogel and her husband, Sig, moved to Simi Valley in 1952. She has been a columnist for the Daily News since 1983. Before starting her writing career, Vogel was a social caseworker, involved in child protection. County last year, she continues to be an active member of the Simi Valley branch of the national group. Ain said Vogel has been active not only in the group, but in the community as well. She has worked with the Simi Valley High School Simi Valley High School is a secondary school located in Simi Valley, California which was established in 1920 as the first high school in the valley. It nestles in the Santa Susana Mountains and is adjacent to the San Fernando Valley, part of the city and county of Ventura. Vogel has helped as a contest judge for group functions, has lectured for American Pen Women programs on column writing, and strives to attend meetings as often as she can, though she lives out of town, Ain said. Vogel will be one of nine women to be honored from branches throughout Southern California. Ain said Vogel will not be able to accept the award at the organization's meeting in Anaheim today because she is attending her son's wedding on the East Coast. The National League of American Pen Women celebrated its 100th birthday in 1997. Past recipients of the award include Diane Reichick in 1996; Linda Aleahmad, 1994; Marilyn Hochheiser, 1992; Diantha Ain, 1990; Margaret Brownly, 1988; and Martha Bolton, 1984.
