NATIONAL DATA JOINS FORCES WITH NATIONAL SEMICONDUCTOR TO SUPPORT NEW PERSONAL ACCESS TECHNOLOGY

ATLANTA, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- National Data Corporation (NYSE: NDC) today announced that it had joined with National Semiconductor (NYSE: NSM) in offering transaction services that support NSC's new personal and portable iPower(TM) technology.
iPower technology provides the necessary data security that will fuel coming advances in electronic commerce. One of those applications is desk-top purchasing for a variety of products and services. Consumers will be able to purchase products such as movies, software, educational materials, catalog items and software games recorded on an encrypted CD-ROM or other media from an office, home or anywhere else an iPower-equipped system is located.
For example, once a consumer selects a desired product from an encrypted CD-ROM, the iPower equipped system will decrypt the information based on credit limits and purchasing ability established with NDC's network. Depending on user activity the system would call NDC's network to check credit or pre-paid limits and to provide payment information to the service or product provider. Following authorization, the iPower system will allow only the appropriate information to be decrypted for immediate use.
"National Semiconductor's iPower technology makes possible an exciting array of new commercial and personal applications coupled with 'point-of-use' desk-top purchasing," said Robert A. Yellowlees, chairman and chief executive officer of National Data. "As multimedia programs combine with cable and telephone access to the home and office, we will be in the forefront of speeding commerce along the new electronic highways. NDC already has a variety of consumer-oriented services. These range from purchase authorization and funds transfer to credit processing and report generation. Our well-established franchise provides a solid basis for our participation in the expansion of the information superhighway.
"We look forward to working with National Semiconductor to explore these opportunities for new methods of delivering information and products to the consumer," said Yellowlees.
"We are especially pleased that NDC is supporting iPower technology," said Walt Curtis, vice president of the iPower Business Unit of National Semiconductor. "NDC's services and expertise will provide a strong commercial link for companies pursuing the advantages of iPower technology, especially those who need a central transaction processing system to collect and manage the transaction flow to homes and offices."
