 CITY--With momentum from its growing success in recent years, National Dance Week 1999 continues to expand the volume and range of its events, celebrations, and activities throughout the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. . In addition to the Dance Magazine Awards, which take place May 3 (see page 28), professional dance companies, schools, teachers, and retailers are gearing up to heighten awareness of the art form during the congressionally sanctioned week of dance. NDW's 1999 slogan, inspired by Shirley MacLaine, this year's national spokesperson, is "Dance for the Health of It."

On the West Coast, a celebration will take place at the California Plaza in downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The sprawling, multi-centered megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered just another district like Hollywood or  on April 30 at noon. At press time Grover Dale was planning an evening dedicated to the television work of Gene Kelly tentatively scheduled to be broadcast April 23 at the Museum of Radio and Television in Los Angeles.

In addition to the high-profile events, there will be hundreds of smaller presentations and activities, such as library exhibits, student performances in local malls, free dance classes, lecture-demonstrations, and open houses. For the second year in a row, a mentor program is being implemented by Patricia Goulding. Professionals in dance-related fields including performance, journalism, therapy, education, and retailing are asked to share their experience and give advice to interested students.
