NATIONAL COMPUTER SYSTEMS EXPECTS LOWER THIRD QUARTER EARNINGS

MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- National Computer Systems (NASDAQ-NMS: NLCS)(NCS) announced today that earnings for its third fiscal quarter ending Oct. 31, 1993 will be below the year earlier $0.23 per share and below analysts' expectations. While the company expects third quarter revenues to be higher than those reported in the third quarter a year ago, the earnings shortfall is the result of softness in sales in the company's education software business, its high-end financial trust business and its imaged-enhanced data entry systems business. Margins have been negatively impacted by higher sales and marketing expenses which were incurred in anticipation of higher revenue levels. NCS expects fourth quarter revenues and earnings to exceed the year earlier levels and full fiscal 1993 revenues and earnings to be higher than in fiscal 1992.
National Computer Systems is an information services company serving the education, business, financial, and assessment markets. The company's common stock is traded on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol NLCS.
