NATIONAL BASEBALL TOURNEY TO OPEN TONIGHT IN LANCASTER.

Byline: Jim Skeen Staff Writer

LANCASTER - Looking to provide fans with high-caliber baseball and to gain some national recognition for the city, municipal government will host a four-team Division I college tournament that begins tonight.

The Clash of the Conferences, billed as the only Division I baseball tournament in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  this year, will run through Sunday at Lancaster's municipal stadium, The Hangar.

Featured teams will be from California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. City officials hope the tournament, which they expect will become an annual event, will get some national and regional media exposure for Lancaster.

Officials of some other universities, including Notre Dame, Stanford and Pepperdine, have already expressed interest in sending teams to future tournaments.

Lancaster city government will spend $37,500 on the tournament, including $27,500 that will be dispersed among the participating colleges. The rest will pay costs for scorekeepers, umpires, balls, programs, game management, marketing, printed tickets and transportation from hotels to the stadium.

City officials said at least part of the municipal spending will be offset by revenue from ticket sales, community sponsorships, concession sales and parking for the games.

The tournament meshes with city efforts to attract tourists and business for sports tournaments and filming. City officials estimate that sports tournaments and film work filled 12,000 hotel rooms last year and pumped $8 million into the Antelope Valley's economy.
