NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WHOLESALER-DISTRIBUTORS ISSUE REACTION TO PRODUCER PRICE INDEX

WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Ron Schreibman, vice president of the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors (NAW), issued the following statement in response to today's release of November Producer Price Index (PPI) figures:
The economy is exhibiting renewed vigor, but not renewed inflation. That's excellent news for business and certainly for consumers as the holiday shopping season proceeds.
The latest producer prices constitute another step in the right direction in the fight against inflation. Prices declined two-tenths of a percent at all three levels of goods processing -- crude, intermediate, and finished. While the cause of a these declines is a weak economy, we're seeing mounting evidence of improvement in several indicators, including industrial production, retail sales, unemployment, and consumer confidence.
President-elect Clinton appears to be inheriting an economy on the upswing. Today's producer price figures and tomorrow's reports on consumer prices and retail sales ought to have an impact on the discussion at next week's economic conference in Little Rock.
The Producer Price Index is an index of prices at which wholesaler-distributors buy from their suppliers.
NAW is a federation of 109 national commodity line associations representing more than 40,000 firms in the wholesale distribution industry.
