NATION'S LARGEST MOVER ORDERS TT150 DRIVING SIMULATOR
ANN ARBOR, Mich., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Perceptronics Inc. (NASDAQ: PERC) announced today that North American Van Lines, the nation's largest mover of household goods, has ordered a TT150 Truck Driving Simulator to test and train its drivers. The simulator, valued at approximately $220,000, is to be delivered in July 1992, and a second simulator is scheduled for delivery in early 1993.
The units will be built by Professional Truckdriving Simulators, a joint venture between Perceptronics and FAAC of Ann Arbor.
"These simulators will permit North American Van Lines to more quickly and thoroughly evaluate the skills of our drivers and potential hires," said John McFann, manager of fleet development for North American. "We will also use the trainers with drivers who are having difficulty with certain driving situations."
"This simulator will put North American Van Lines at the cutting edge of enhancing driving skills for its fleet," said Dr. Gershon Weltman, chief executive officer of Perceptronics Inc. "Our system allows trucking companies to safely, effectively and economically test, train and reinforce skills for drivers in situations not possible on the open road or in real vehicles. Our and FAAC's years of experience in creating advanced training simulators for the military made it possible for us to be bring the benefits of this leading-edge technology to the trucking industry.
"We are aggressively marketing the TT150 to other trucking industry companies as well as to government agencies, and believe that this product will begin to contribute to company revenues and income in fiscal 1993," added Weltman.
The TT150 uses state-of-the-art, computer-generated imagery to present a variety of driving environments that include expressway, city and rural routes. The simulator is totally interactive with a realistic cab containing responsive controls and instruments. It also features an advanced digital sound system that provides engine, transmission and road noises to bring a higher degree of realism to the simulated environment.
The simulator's instructor station provides for selection of different driving conditions, including weather, traffic behavior and density and trailer load configurations. Specialized software permits objective evaluations of each driver's performance.
Perceptronics and FAAC began development of the TT150 several years ago, based on the trucking industry's need for more effective, yet cost- conscious training systems. In addition to the joint venture's proven experience with military training simulators -- both for aircraft and ground vehicles -- Professional Truckdriving Simulators drew significant participation from the trucking industry through an advisory council formed to contribute first-hand information regarding safety and training needs. The council represents some of the largest fleet operators in the industry, including Federal Express, Roadway Express, National Tank Truck Carriers and North American Van Lines, as well as the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute.
North American Van Lines, headquartered in Fort Wayne, Ind., is the fifth largest trucking company in the country, serving customers worldwide through its three operating groups: Relocation Services, High Value Products and Commercial Transport. North American is a subsidiary of Norfolk Southern Corp.
Perceptronics is engaged in research and system development and in the manufacture and marketing of computer-based simulation software and systems for commercial and military training and decision support.
