NASCAR Tests inthinc Lap Counter in Sprint Cup Series.
The use of the GPS (Global Positioning Satellite)-based lap counter builds on a seven-year relationship between inthinc and NASCAR. inthinc's Witness Incident Data Recorder has been used in all NASCAR series since 2002 to record driving data and improve car and driver safety. The data collected has been instrumental in equipment and track improvements and in evaluating the effectiveness of the car safety improvements which are currently being used in the Sprint Cup cars.
"We have had successful testing of the lap counter in the Nationwide and Craftsman Series and look forward to similar results in the Sprint Cup," said Todd Follmer, president of the inthinc Motorsports Division. "NASCAR is a great partner for us as one of the most safety-conscious organizations in the world. We are engaged in taking the technology from the race track to the street to improve safety and save lives among drivers."
inthinc founder Scott McClellan added, "The lap counter from inthinc has performed well in the Craftsman and Nationwide Series this year. This success has led to it now being tested in the Sprint Cup cars. It is imperative that a system used by NASCAR is accurate and reliable, and we have been pleased with the ability of the tiwi GPS-based device to consistently maintain a signal to deliver accurate, real-time feedback of car laps and finish order."
The tiwi system utilizes proven technology that has been available to commercial fleets for 10 years, where it has reduced accidents by more than 80 percent annually. The tiwi product will be released next year for light commercial and delivery use and another version for consumers as a teen driving safety solution that mentors young drivers to dramatically improve driving skills, reduce accidents and increase driver safety.
NASCAR's primary lap counter utilizes an inductive loop system on the start/finish line, which sends and receives a signal to and from a transponder in each car. The tiwi system uses GPS and mapping technology to create a series of zones around any track and counts each time a car passes through specified zones, ensuring a high level of lap counting accuracy. The current backup system requires a member from each team to sit close to the track with a clear view of the start/finish line and manually record the passing time of each car.
inthinc combines innovative ideas with engineering expertise to create breakthrough technology that mentors drivers to save lives, prevent accidents and safeguard property. inthinc's technology dramatically improves driver behavior and has been documented by clients to reduce accidents by more than 80 percent annually.
