FONTANA -- Jason Leffler has tasted racing at the NASCAR NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing), organization that sanctions American stock-car races, est. 1948. It held its first race in Daytona Beach, Fla.  Nextel Cup Series level and he has every reason to want to spit it out.

Leffler, a driver from Long Beach who used to race USAC USAC Universal Service Administrative Company
USAC United States Auto Club
USAC Universidad de San Carlos (University of San Carlos, Guatemala)
USAC US Airways Center (Phoenix, Arizona)
Midgets and Sprint cars at Ventura Raceway, was the driver of the No. 11 Chevrolet Monte Carlo The Chevrolet Monte Carlo was an American mid-size car. Originally introduced by Chevrolet for the 1970 model year (as competition with the Ford Thunderbird), it has gone through six generations as of 2007.  for Joe Gibbs Racing Joe Gibbs Racing (also known as JGR) is a group of NASCAR racing teams owned by Joe Gibbs, who first started racing on the NASCAR circuit in 1991. Headquartered in Huntersville, North Carolina, more notably near Charlotte, the team amassed three NEXTEL Cup Championships  to start the season last year.

He didn't make it to the end of the season. Denny Hamlin eventually took his place in the No. 11 car and is now poised to be the Nextel Cup Series rookie of the year Rookie of the Year may refer to:
  • Rookie of the Year (award), a sports award for the most outstanding rookie in a given season
  • Rookie of the Year (film), a 1993 starring Thomas Ian Nicholas
  • Rookie of the Year (album) by rapper Ya Boy
and secure a spot in the Chase for the Championship, the 10-race playoff to determine the Cup Series champion. Hamlin would be the first rookie to make the Chase.

Leffler still has a ride in NASCAR. He is in the No. 38 Chevrolet Monte Carlo for Braun Racing in the NASCAR Busch Series. Even though he said he wants to return to Cup racing one day, he is happy with his team and likes his chances to win some races.

``I'd like to get back to Cup racing,'' Leffler said. ``I'm just concentrating on running up front in the Busch Series.''

Leffler was one of three drivers in Saturday's Busch Series at California Speedway with Southern California ties. Burney Lamar and Auggie Vidovich, both graduates of the NASCAR Southwest Series and West Series, spent much of their careers racing at California tracks like Irwindale Speedway.

Vidovich was in the West Series race at California Speedway race Friday night, and led the first 41 laps, but was taken out when an out of control car slid up the track and pinched him in the wall.

Lamar, rookie driver of the No. 77 Chevrolet Monte Carlo for Kevin Harvick Inc., is already a winner at California Speedway. He won the West Series race at California Speedway last year.

On the radio: Fans wanting to listen to the race on the radio can turn to 570-AM (KLAC).
