NASA TOUTING ITS TEST FACILITIES.Byline: Daily News EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway. - NASA engineers and pilots promoted its supersonic research aircraft and wind tunnels at Aerospace Testing Expo 2005 last week at the Long Beach Convention Center. The exposition gave NASA the opportunity to talk about its aeronautics research capabilities to several thousand key players in the global aerospace industry. Visitors lined up at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center The Dryden Flight Research Center (DFRC), located inside Edwards Air Force Base, is an aeronautical research center operated by NASA. On March 26, 1976 it was named in honor of the late Hugh L. to try their hand at piloting a jet flight simulator. Dryden, located on Edwards Air Force Base, has the capability to make simulations for a wide variety of aircraft. Dryden is also home to supersonic jet aircraft such as an F-15B that recently helped engineers model the trajectories of divots of space shuttle fuel tank insulating foam, to help prepare the shuttle fleet to return to flight. In addition to research conducted by Dryden for NASA, the aircraft and facilities showcased at the expo can be hired by other government agencies and industry. Representatives from NASA's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field near San Jose came to the event to talk about wind tunnels. Ames has the agency's West Coast wind tunnel facilities, used for research dating back to World War II. Joining the Ames crew at Expo 2005 were engineers from NASA's Glenn Research Center The Glenn Research Center (more correctly, the NASA John H. Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field) is a NASA center, located in Cleveland, Ohio between Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and the Rocky River Reservation (part of the Cleveland Metroparks). near Cleveland, Ohio. Glenn specializes in wind tunnel tests of engines and power-plant systems. Engineers from Langley Research Center Langley Research Center (LaRC) Oldest of NASA's field centers, LaRC is located in Hampton, Virginia and directly borders Poquoson, Virginia and Langley Air Force Base. LaRC focuses primarily on aeronautical research, though the Lunar Lander was flight-tested at this facility and a in Hampton, Va., were at the expo to explain Langley's various test capabilities including a transonic transonic in ultrasonography, the complete transmission of sound so the image appears black; anechoic; echolucent. wind tunnel that can be pressurized pres·sur·ize tr.v. pres·sur·ized, pres·sur·iz·ing, pres·sur·iz·es 1.
