Nancy Claster, who played teacher Miss Nancy on the original children's television show ``Romper Room'' from 1953 until 1964, died Friday of cancer at her home. She was 82. Created by Claster's husband, Bert, ``Romper Room'' first aired on Baltimore Baltimore, city (1990 pop. 736,014), N central Md., surrounded by but politically independent of Baltimore co., on the Patapsco River estuary, an arm of Chesapeake Bay; inc. 1745. station WBAL WBAL West Bay Athletic League (San Francisco Bay Area) . It was so successful that the Clasters trained other hosts and locally produced ``Romper Room'' shows aired in 150 cities. Nancy Claster, who had a teaching degree, debuted on the show after the original teacher scheduled to appear canceled. In a classroom setting, she read nursery rhymes nursery rhymes, verses, generally brief and usually anonymous, for children. The best-known examples are in English and date mostly from the 17th cent. A popular type of rhyme is used in "counting-out" games, e.g., "Eenie, meenie, minie, mo. , sang songs, played games and taught safety lessons with a small group of preschoolers. She would close each show by looking into her ``Magic Mirror'' and saying the names of children she could see at home - children whose parents had told her they watched the show. |
