Still grieving the unsolved murder of his sister, Dawn, on Oct. 1 in West Covina, Nakatani said: ``I've got an angel on my side.''

Nakatani won the $1 million Breeders' Cup Sprint The Breeders' Cup Sprint is an American Weight for Age Grade I Thoroughbred horse race for three year olds & up. Run on dirt over a distance of 6 Furlongs (3/4 mile), the race has been held annually since 1984 at a different racetrack in the United States or Canada as part of the  aboard Lit de Justice In France under the Ancien RĂ©gime, the lit de justice was a particular formal session of the Parlement of Paris, under the presidency of the king, for the compulsory registration of the royal edicts.  just one race earlier and said, ``I know that Dawn got me there. It's really hard on me, but I'm trying to be strong.''

Trained at Santa Anita by Wally Dollase - Nakatani's father-in-law - Jewel Princess beat Serena's Song by 1-1/2 lengths, giving her a third victory this year over the 1995 3-year-old champion filly.

Only seven fillies and mares were entered in the Distaff over 1-1/8 miles, and one of them, the Canadian-based Mysteriously, was scratched with a bad ankle. That left six in this traditionally small but tough Breeders' Cup race.

Top Secret, ridden by Mike Smith, took the early lead and led until the field went into the turn for home. That's when Gary Stevens got Serena's Song moving.

Serena's Song, trained by D. Jewel Princess, owned by California's Martha and Richard Stephen and the Thoroughbred Corporation, claimed the lead with less than a sixteenth of a mile to go and stretched it out to 1-1/2 lengths over Serena's Song, who was 1-3/4 lengths ahead of the Argentine-bred Different, suffering her first loss this year. My Flag was fourth, followed by Top Secret and Clear Mandate.

Serena's Song now has lost six in a row but she has finished second five times and third once. Two of those previous second-place finishes were to Jewel Princess, in the Vanity on July 21 at Hollywood Park and in the Louisville Breeders' Cup on May 3 at Churchill Downs.

Jewel Princess returned $6.80 at Woodbine woodbine, name for several vines, among them honeysuckle and Virginia creeper.
