New York City City (pop., 2000: 8,008,278), southeastern New York, at the mouth of the Hudson River. The largest city in the U.S. had all the makings of a bruising bruising discoloration and actual hemorrhage at the site of injury, and a serious disadvantage in the meat trade. Earlier this year, Giuliani had quipped that ``New York could kick any other city's a--.'' So on a TV talk show in New York, Riordan met Giuliani's boast with an equally sharp rejoinder The answer made by a defendant in the second stage of Common-Law Pleading that rebuts or denies the assertions made in the plaintiff's replication. The rejoinder allows a defendant to present a more responsive and specific statement challenging the allegations made : ``To kick somebody's a--,'' the mayor said, ``you have to be behind them.'' Yet when Riordan, a native New Yorker, came face to face with Giuliani during a news conference Tuesday, he found himself issuing an apology to the former federal prosecutor - and even admitting that he is somewhat embarrassed by the ads. ``I was kidding him about it,'' Riordan recalled in a telephone interview. ``I said to Rudy that I apologized for the ad and said now that I'm back here, the Big Apple is redder and shinier than ever.'' It was all part of the long-running feud over who is America's No. 1 mayor and which is America's No. 1 city, much as Angelenos and New Yorkers have vied for years. Riordan has not been shy about questioning how anyone could live on the East Coast and boasted of Los Angeles' environment, climate, beaches and universities. ``This is kind of an ongoing fun little tug-of-war with New York to draw attention to the fact of our diversity,'' said Tracy Williams Tracy Williams is an American singer who belongs to UC3, an all female trio from Tampa Bay, Florida. NewLAMP timed its ad campaign to coincide with Riordan's visit to New York City to basically declare Los Angeles as the tops with an ad showing a red apple turning green and a headline, ``Uh-oh, New York's just seen the latest statistics on L.A.'s economy.'' ``This tells everybody how well Los Angeles is doing,'' NewLAMP Executive Director Regina Birdsell said. ``We thought this would be a fun way to tell them, by using the icon of the Big Apple turning green. ``And while we're running these ads, we have our businessman mayor in New York to be a spokesman for our economy. This puts his fingerprints on what we're doing.'' As outlined in the ad, among Los Angeles' claims is that it is No. 1 in the creation of new jobs and new businesses; No. 1 in manufacturing, apparel industry, software, multimedia and the television-film industry; and No. 1 in international trade and affordability. Not mentioned but nonetheless a sore spot, Los Angeles has won back the MTV Video Music Awards The MTV Video Music Awards were established in 1984 by MTV to celebrate the top music videos of the year. We want investors to begin looking at our entrepreneurs and invest in them. We want to make sure they know what's happening out here and the future businesses of the next century.'' New Yorkers, in contrast, boast of their cultural landmarks; corporate, financial and media headquarters; museums; Broadway; the success of the Yankees and Mets; and the fact it has two professional football teams - even though both play in New Jersey. Beyond the posturing and boasting, Riordan said the main point of his meeting with Giuliani was to discuss common efforts in fighting crime. It was during a 1995 visit that Riordan learned of New York's crime tracking program, which has since taken root in Los Angeles. On this trip, Riordan said he learned of an anti-narcotics program he wants studied while Police Chief Bernard C. Also, we told him of our neighborhood code watch program, curfew violations and the CLEAR (Community Law Enforcement and Recovery) anti-gang program.''
