The Newbury Park boys' volleyball team's season ended as it started, with a loss to Dos Pueblos. In March, it was just a season-opening sweep. This time, it was Wednesday in the Southern Section Division II semifinals, 15-6, 10-15, 15-12, 15-9 at Westlake High.

The Panthers (20-6) believed they received a gift in beating top-seeded San Marcos San Marcos (săn mär`kəs).

Instead, the mental strength wasn't there, and as the match went on, it became more evident this wasn't going to be the Panthers' night.

One thing was missing: the passing. It was inconsistent, which was why Mark Davis didn't think the Panthers played better.

``In the last game, me and Sterling (Hannemann) passed better,'' Davis said. ``This time, the passing wasn't as good, and that threw us off right away. We let down, so they took their best shot.''

The fourth game was the worst.

Casey Patterson tipped a ball, and no one moved to set the ball, which fell to the ground, giving Dos Pueblos an 8-2 lead.

Davis, who led with 24 kills, lightly hit the ball into the net instead of going for the kill. That gave the Chargers a 13-5 lead.

``We got ourselves so deep in a hole, it's hard to dig out to depart; to leave, esp. hastily; decamp.

In some ways, the numbers indicate Newbury Park improved since beating San Marcos. The Panthers scored points in bunches, took some momentum and cut down on the service errors from 20 to 15.

Still, Newbury Park coach Craig Witmer knew better.

``I wasn't sure we were mentally ready to handle it,'' he said. ``Every sideout was tough. Every point was tough. I think we could've played better. I wish we would've played better.''
