Father Robert Counselman, chairman of the Board of the Middlesex county Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. "We originally approached Matzel & Mumford for assistance in obtaining a contractor who could install the utility connections for the home," Father Counselman said.

"Their decision to make such a considerable donation came as a very pleasant surprise. While we rely almost entirely on volunteer help, there are occasions where we need to pay for labor, and the money gives us much-needed flexibility in doing so."

The New Brunswick home is the second project to be undertaken by the five-year-old Middlesex county Chapter of the nationally renowned Habitat for Humanity. "This is a terrific opportunity for us to give back to the community," said Roger Mumford, president of The Matzel & Mumford Organization, one of New Jersey's leading residential developers with a long history of developing in Middlesex county.

"We've always prided ourselves on being active members in the communities in which we build, and are pleased to be able to contribute to such a worthy cause." Nearly 20 volunteers are expected to donate their time and skills every Saturday until the home is completed in about a year. A number of professional tradespeople trades·peo·ple

"We will sell the home to them at cost, somewhere in the $50,000-to-$80,000 range, with Habitat holding a 10- or 20year, interest-free mortgage. As part of the agreement, the buyers will also spend 500 hours to help on the construction of their home and on a future Habitat home. The 'sweat equity' gives them an additional sense of homeownership, while the program as a whole helps remove them from the cycle of poverty."
