Mysticom Unveils Gigabit Ethernet Over Copper Transceiver Device.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 21, 2002

Low-Power, High-Performance IC Fuels the Deployment of Low-Cost

Gigabit Ethernet Over Copper Data Communications Products

Mysticom Ltd. today introduced a low-power, high-performance Gigabit Ethernet over copper transceiver device that will enable the cost-effective deployment of data communications products based on the Gigabit Ethernet standard. The new Mysticom(R) MY1001 Gigabit Ethernet physical layer (PHY) device employs advanced digital-signal processing (DSP) algorithms that allow it to exceed the performance requirements of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  802.3ab standard. Moreover, its small footprint allows designers to save valuable board real estate and lower the overall cost of their end systems.

In separate press releases issued today, the company said it would begin selling ICs directly to suppliers of data communications solutions and also unveiled its 10 Gigabit Ethernet transceiver IC, the MY3004. The MY1001 Gigabit Ethernet and MY3004 10G Ethernet transceivers are the company's first integrated circuits. Together, these products can satisfy the wide range of applications based on Ethernet protocols, including systems used in the local area network (LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. ), metropolitan area network (MAN) and wide area network (WAN).

"The complexities of designing Gigabit Ethernet over copper transceivers have prevented many companies from delivering devices for this fast-growing market segment," said Dr. David Almagor, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Mysticom. "Mysticom's extensive DSP and mixed-signal expertise has allowed us to scale our technology from 10 Mbps to 10 Gbps and deliver a Gigabit Ethernet over copper device with compelling performance and low power."

Key Features and Benefits of the MY1001

The MY1001 is a 10BASE-T/100Base-TX/1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet transceiver that fully complies with the IEEE 802.3 and 802.3ab standards. The device features low-power consumption of 1.8 watts and operates over 140 meters of cable with the required bit error rate (BER (1) (Basic Encoding Rules) A set of encoding rules for ASN.1 notation, which is a method for defining data structures. See ASN.1.

). It is manufactured using a 0.15-micron standard CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Pronounced "c-moss." The most widely used integrated circuit design. It is found in almost every electronic product from handheld devices to mainframes.  process and housed in a small 14 mm x 20 mm package. The MY1001 supports a broad range of standard system interfaces, including the media independent interface (MII), gigabit media independent interface (GMII GMII Gigabit Media Independent Interface ), ten-bit interface (TBI TBI 1. Thyroxine-binding index 2. Total body irradiation ), reduced gigabit media independent interface Reduced Gigabit Media Independent Interface (RGMII) specifies a particular interface between an Ethernet MAC and PHY.

RGMII uses half the number of pins as used in the GMII interface.
(RGMII RGMII Reduced Gigabit Media Independent Interface ) and reduced ten-bit interface (RTBI RTBI National Association of Round Tables of Britain and Ireland

). Other features include:

Several Power Management Modes: The device supports "Wake-on-LAN" and "Energy Detect Power Down." Mysticom has also developed its own "PowerOptimizer" function that enables the PHY to automatically optimize power consumption based on the operation mode and cable quality.

Auto Cross-Over and Semi Cross-Over Detection: These functions enable the MY1001 to detect and correct crossed wires under a wider variety of conditions than competing devices. The auto cross-over function detects and corrects crossing between twisted pairs and is provided for all transmission modes (10/100/1000Base-T). The semi-crossover function for 1000-Base T mode allows detection and correction of cables when only two of the four twisted pairs are crossed.

SpeedOptimizer Function: This feature, developed by Mysticom, maximizes data throughput by examining the quality of the link and establishing the maximum speed that can be supported. If link partners fail to establish a link through auto negotiation, the Mysticom PHY will use this function to find the next highest allowable speed for data transmission. In many cases, devices under similar conditions will fail to establish a link.

Quality and Cable Length Estimation: Provides critical cable quality data that allows end users to debug problems in the network. This function is also used to provide the information necessary for the PowerOptimizer and SpeedOptimizer functions to optimize power and performance.

Packaging, Availability and Pricing

The Mysticom MY1001 Gigabit Ethernet transceiver IC is housed in a 128-pin plastic quad flat package See PQFP.  (PQFP (Plastic Quad Flat Package) Refers to many varieties of QFP chip packages, which are molded in plastic. See QFP. ). It is sampling now and is expected to be available in volume production in Q2 2002. It will be priced at $20 in quantities of 1,000.
