Mystic desert.

Renowned Namibian photographer Amy Schoeman recently held her fourth exhibition for the year in the National Art Gallery of Namibia. The innovative creativity of this new work was honoured by Professor Andre du Pisani at the exhibition opening:

"While her beloved Skeleton Coast, Damaraland, Kaokoland and other fascinating parts of the Namib Desert provide the artist with icons, these are utilised in her own unique way as part of her allegorical and memory landscape. Reality gives way to the recesses of her own imagination, and unlike in some of her earlier renditions of dunes and rocks, raw power has, here, been superseded by greater introspection, a return to the source of Creation and Being ....

From the opening image, entitled "The portals of discovery" to the closing photograph, entitled "Beyond the Big Bang" with its post-cataclysmic imagery, the viewer is transported into a world that lies beyond the surface reality of her subjects. Her work is disciplined and directed, there are echoes of some of her earlier work, but the chemistry of her imagination allows the artist to soar into a Spiritual realm ....

Take a closer look at the works on display and you will soon realise that Amy Schoeman is not interested in the lifelessness of the desert; rather in its Spirit and Soul. The desert is also more than an escape; it provides her with space and peace to contemplate the encounter that we call Life."
