:MYLX), the world's leading RAID controller vendor in the non-captive network systems marketplace, today announced the shipment of eXtremeRAID, a breakthrough RAID storage controller that significantly eliminates I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

eXtremeRAID incorporates several new technologies -- including the industry's first 233 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  on board RISC processor, a 64-bit PCI bus, multiple Ultra2 SCSI LVD buses and new Mylex firmware -- designed to provide maximum performance.

"eXtremeRAID is more than just a RAID controller -- it's a strategic technology that enables the creation of truly scalable enterprise-class servers," said Eric Herzog, Mylex senior director of market development.

"Several of our PC server OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  customers are leveraging eXtremeRAID to introduce new high-end server families that deliver the enterprise-class performance required for today's data intensive environments."

eXtremeRAID builds upon technology originally developed for Mylex's award-winning DAC960PJ controller, which currently holds numerous standing TPC-C A benchmark that measures overall transaction processing performance.  applications. eXtremeRAID incorporates the latest technology to address I/O bottlenecks between the disk drive and the controller and between the controller and the PC server.

eXtremeRAID Integrates World's Fastest On-Board RISC Processor With Intelligent Firmware

The eXtremeRAID controller integrates a 233 MHz Intel StrongARM on-board RISC processor with Mylex's own newly enhanced intelligent firmware. Working together, these two components de-couple disk drive I/O management tasks from the network operating system An operating system that is designed for network use. Normally, it is a complete operating system with file, task and job management; however, with some earlier products, it was a separate component that ran under the OS; for example, LAN Server required OS/2, and LANtastic required DOS.  (NOS), freeing the NOS to service other applications. eXtremeRAID's on board processor is 250% faster than traditional 66 MHz processors, which are currently the industry standard.

eXtremeRAID Integrates Ultra2 SCSI LVD Technology with 64-Bit PCI Bus Architecture

eXtremeRAID further eliminates potential I/O bottlenecks by incorporating new Ultra2 SCSI LVD (low voltage differential (hardware) Low Voltage Differential - (LVD) A method of driving SCSI cables that will be formalised in the SCSI-3 specifications. LVD uses less power than the current differential drive (HVD), is less expensive and will allow the higher speeds of Ultra-2 SCSI. LVD requires 3. ) technology and a 64-bit PCI bus architecture. Ultra2 SCSI LVD doubles maximum data throughput rates between the disk drive and the controller by raising data transfer rate bandwidth to 80 MB/sec per channel from the previous 40 MB/sec per channel.

eXtremeRAID incorporates a new 64-bit PCI bus architecture which effectively doubles the data bandwidth path between the RAID controller and the PC server. eXtremeRAID's 64-bit PCI bus supports burst rates up to 266 MB/sec, while traditional 32-bit PCI buses only support burst data transfer rates up to 133 MB/sec.

"Storage systems dramatically impact the overall performance of enterprise class servers," said Scott Cleland, Mylex senior product marketing manager. "eXtremeRAID's unique architecture eliminates potential bottlenecks at each point of the data path -- between the storage and the controller, at the controller, and between the controller and the server."

eXtremeRAID Delivers Truly Scalable Performance

eXtremeRAID enables administrators to improve storage system performance simply by adding additional drives to the array. This performance improvement is achieved by distributing data access across multiple working drive spindles while leveraging the additive data throughput of additional RAID controllers and controller channels.

eXtremeRAID's unique combination of the industry's first 233 MHz on board RISC processor, a 64-bit PCI bus, multiple Ultra2 SCSI LVD buses and new Mylex firmware allows the system to provide more scalable performance than traditional RAID controllers. Each eXtremeRAID controller supports up to 810 GB of scalable capacity. Single server capacities of over 12 terabytes are easily achievable using multiple eXtremeRAID controllers.

eXtremeRAID Ideal for Clustering Environments

eXtremeRAID is engineered to support the performance and reliability requirements of clustered environments. The choice of RAID storage technology is especially important in clustered environments, since server clusters typically rely upon a single shared storage system. eXtremeRAID's superior performance, fault tolerance and reliability make it ideal for clustering in a PCI environment. eXtremeRAID's support for Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT MSFT Microsoft (stock symbol)
MSFT Movimento Sociale Fiamma Tricolore (Italy)
MSFT Multi-Stage Fitness Test
MSFT Master of Science in Family Therapy
MSFT Macalester Students for Fair Trade
) Cluster Server (WolfPack) will be available the fourth quarter of 1998.

eXtremeRAID Delivers Exceptional Reliability and Manageability

eXtremeRAID provides customers the same high level of reliability that they have come to expect with all Mylex RAID products. These features include automatic detection of failed drives; automatic and transparent rebuild of failed drives; on-line RAID capacity expansion; hot spare drive support; hot swap drive support; RAID configuration stored on both disk and in non-volatile RAM; SMART capable drive support and SAF-TE SAF-TE SCSI Access Fault-Tolerant Enclosure  enclosure management.

eXtremeRAID offers several new features designed to provide increased ease of set up, flexibility and management. eXtremeRAID's Immediate RAID Availability feature, for example, enables the array to be used as soon as it is configured. Most other RAID controllers require administrators to wait up to several hours as the initialization in·i·tial·ize

 tasks are completed.

eXtremeRAID will include Mylex's M.O.R.E.(TM) 2.0, the new Mylex online RAID expansion tool suite, which is scheduled to ship in the fourth quarter of 1998. Important management features include RAID-expansion, which allows users to add drives to existing arrays and re-stripe data across all the drives; RAID-migration, which allows easy online reconstruction of data from one RAID configuration to another; and support for copy-drive groups, which is a method of transferring the contents of one logical drive to another in a single step.

A BIOS configuration utility enables automatic configuration of the system, independent of the operating system and without requiring the use of extra software utilities.

Another important feature of eXtremeRAID is Mylex's GAM(TM) (Global Array Manager), which enables the RAID system to be configured, maintained and monitored remotely over the Internet or corporate intranet. GAM supports Mylex's entire line of RAID controller solutions and is the world's best-selling RAID management software.

eXtremeRAID is also I20-compliant. I20 is an industry standard specification which allows intelligent I/O devices to communicate with one-another independent of the host CPU CPU
