Mylex, a leading supplier of RAID controllers, today announced that its eXtremeRAID(TM) 2000 has helped the 8-way Unisys e-@ction Enterprise Server ES5085R achieve the first-ever TPC-C A benchmark that measures overall transaction processing performance. See TPC.  benchmark result for a Windows 2000 Datacenter-based server.

TPC-C is a rigorous benchmark performed under the strict specifications of the Transaction Processing Performance Council Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC) is a non-profit organization founded in 1985 to define transaction processing and database benchmarks and to disseminate objective, verifiable TPC performance data to the industry.  (http://www.tpc.org) and is designed to provide an indication of real-world server performance and price/performance.

The Unisys e-@ction Enterprise Server ES5085R achieved the top Windows 2000 performance, with 48,767 tpmC (Transactions Per Minute), with a price/performance of $20.13 per tpmC. The TPC-C configuration included six Mylex eXtremeRAID 2000 Ultra 160 RAID controllers used to manage a total of 274 disk drives. The Unisys e-@ction ES5085R Enterprise Server is based on Intel Pentium III Xeon 550MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  processors running Microsoft SQL Server A relational DBMS from Microsoft that is a major component of the Windows Server System. It is Microsoft's high-end client/server database and is closely integrated with Microsoft Visual Studio and the Microsoft Office System.  2000 and Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server. The report, posted at http://www.tpc.org/new_result/c-result1.idc?id=100021601, used Datacenter's ability to address 32GB of main memory to beat the previous best 8-processor Windows NT result by 20%.

"Unisys continues to work with Mylex because they provide some of the best disk controllers in the industry," said Bill Maclean, head of program and product management, Enterprise Server Business, Unisys Systems and Technology. "The performance of our servers must match or beat other Unix servers because we serve customers who need mainframe-class scalability, availability and resilience."

"We're pleased that Unisys was able to take advantage of the new level of SCSI SCSI
in full Small Computer System Interface

Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB.
RAID performance provided by our latest Ultra 160 SCSI controller," said Eric Herzog, vice president of marketing for Mylex. "We congratulate Unisys on setting this new world record and are pleased that the eXtremeRAID 2000 contributed to this achievement."

eXtremeRAID 2000 Leverages Latest SCSI Technology to Maximize

Performance

Mylex's eXtremeRAID 2000 helps Unisys servers achieve maximum performance by integrating several advanced technologies, including Mylex firmware, a 233 MHz Intel(R) StrongArm(R) on-board RISC processor, a 64-bit PCI bus and multiple Ultra 2 SCSI LVD See LVDS.

buses. The controller delivers performance of around 14,000I/Os per second as compared to the 2,500 I/Os per second typical of many other controllers.

Mylex's eXtremeRAID 2000 supports the latest Ultra SCSI interface standard, Ultra 160. The interface improves network storage reliability and performance and delivers a 160MB/second transfer rate, double the data throughput of Ultra2 SCSI RAID controllers. The controller allows the network storage manager to easily improve storage system performance as the network grows. Each controller features four Wide Ultra 160 SCSI channels that support up to 60 drives, allowing system configurations of over 4.32TB of high performance storage per controller. In NT environments, each server in the network can hold up to 32 eXtremeRAID 2000 controllers.

Specifications, Pricing and Availability

The Unisys ES5085R configuration as tested will be available on August 1, 2000. The Unisys server and all Unisys content in the test configuration are available now. Mylex eXtremeRAID 2000 is available as an option with the Unisys e-@ction Enterprise Server ES5085R, as well as through Mylex's worldwide OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  partners. The controllers may also be purchased through Mylex's worldwide channel network, which includes distributors, resellers and systems integrators.
