My sister says that if you wear your glasses too much, your eyesight will get worse. Is this true?

Dear Tabitha:

Glasses can definitely help people see the world more clearly. But wearing, glasses wont change the way your eyes see on their own - for better or for worse.

When light rays enter the eye, they pass through a thin, clear membrane called a lens. The lens helps focus the light on the back of the eyeball, in an area called the retina. The retina contains nerve cells that send a picture of what you,re looking at to the brain.

The shape of a persons eyeball or lens and the way they work together may cause the light falling on the retina to be out of focus. Glasses provide another "lens" that focuses the light more clearly on the retina. The result is a sharper, clearer image.

Glasses can help you see better - when you wear them. But they can't "cure" your vision problems by changing the shape of your eyeball or the way your own lens works. Glasses also won't make your vision worse. So, you "see," wearing your glasses will not harm your eyes.
