My advocate photo project.

MY HIGH SCHOOL

For high school I attended the Hawaii Preparatory Academy Hawaii Preparatory Academy is a coeducational, boarding, independent school in Kamuela, Hawaiʻi teaching kindergarten through the twelfth grade. Founded in 1949 by The Right Reverend Harry S. , a college prep school only a five-minute drive from my house. It was once an Episcopal school for boys, and its Davies Chapel Committee to help create a more diversified service that would better address the needs of a diverse, international student body.

WAIPIO

For their 40th anniversary issue, The Advocate staff asked me to document my life for them. They wanted me--and two other young people, whose lives are chronicled on Advocate.com--to give a visual account of what it is to be young and gay today. I'm Steven, 19, a junior at the University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission . I grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii, in a town called Waimea, and I returned there this summer. This is my life at the place that will forever be my home.

KASSIA

My friend Kassia and I hang out at Houling Canyon, one of the primary gathering points for local teenagers. Since there is not much to do in Waimea--especially after 8 p.m.--a lot of time is spent lounging around with friends. Fortunately, Hawaii provides us with some spectacular scenery.

PU'UHONVA

I love to visit Pu'uhonna O Homaunau. A Pu'uhonna is a sacred place (Civil Law) the place where a deceased person is buried.

FARMERS' MARKET

Kassia and I enjoy a large shave ice on Ali'i Drive. Our favorite flavor is Li Ling mui, an Asian--influenced blend of dried plum sugar, salt, and HSG HSG High School Graduate
