I have been portrayed in the press, and with good reason, as intensely focused on the constant improvement of police service to the people of Los Angeles. Because of my nature and the nature of this commitment, I rarely have much spare time to engage in my other passion auto racing. But the World Wide Web has been an invaluable tool, allowing me to keep up with this minor obsession with an ease that I truly appreciate.

Going online permits me to catch up on the latest racing news between the challenges that consistently arise in my professional life. One of the sites that allows me to indulge in this passion is Thatsracing. With daily updates of racing news, racing schedules and video clips from the track, I am always up to speed, even if I've missed ESPN or the sports pages for weeks.

On the rare occasions that a free weekend becomes available, I can access information on races being held nationally. When I can attend an event, I also use the site to help book hotel rooms and restaurants.

Thatsracing also indexes all races against the major television networks. This allows me to plan my indulgence of this diversion at home in front of the TV with a single, two-second glance.

Currently with more than 6,000 pages of information and access to over 10,000 files, it is the largest Web site in existence in the law enforcement community.

Lapdonline has also proven itself very successful in helping release and disseminate information to the public. In March of this year, after the department completed its report to the Board of Inquiry into the Rampart corruption incident, the full 360-page document and 27-page executive summary were posted online at our site.

During that first month, more than 89,000 of the Board of Inquiry's full reports were downloaded.

Overall, since its inception in August 1998, the LAPD site has had 42.5 million hits -- with more than half of those occurring this year.

uscfootball.com -- This is one of many fan sites that I like to browse. Although I try not to miss any home games, I like to use the Web to keep up on football at my alma mater. Fighton.com and fansonly.com are other sites that I like to access to keep abreast of the latest developments.
