: Scholastic, 2006. 36 pp. $16.95. This picture book presents three ancient Zen tales that invite us all, children and adults, to look at the world in a different way. The stories are told by Stillwater, a panda panda, name for two nocturnal Asian mammals of the order Carnivora: the red panda, Ailurus fulgens, and the giant panda, Ailuropoda melanoleuca.  who "speaks with a slight panda accent." When he moves into the neighborhood he is visited by three siblings, Michael, Addie, and Karl. . When Addie bakes him a cake, with a bamboo shoot in the top for a decoration, he asks if it is her birthday. Addie says, "No," and asks why he would ask that. Stillwater explains that he gives presents to his friends on his birthday to celebrate that he was born and got to know them. This is a beautiful picture book and the text will invite discussion with older children. Author's notes also are included. Ages 5-9.--MAH
