Political coups have, in the past, often meant bloodshed in the streets of Latin America Latin America, the Spanish-speaking, Portuguese-speaking, and French-speaking countries (except Canada) of North America, South America, Central America, and the West Indies. . The violence has diminished, but the revolving door still spins as financial crises, illness, and civil war have pressured institutionally weak governments across the region. A historic economic crisis in Argentina put 6 presidents in and out of office, most of them lasting less than a week. In Venezuela, the 2002 coup resulted in 48-hour-long presidential terms of two interim leaders. Ecuador's president fled to Brazil, while energy issues forced Bolivia's president to step down.
