Music of Turina and Debussy De·bus·sy   , Claude Achille 1862-1918.

 Orchestra/Jesus Lopez-Cobos (Telarc CD-80574)

This CD is apparently going to be the last release from the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra As the fifth-oldest orchestra in the United States, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) has a legacy of fine music making as reflected in its performances in historic Music Hall, recordings, and international tours.  under Lopez-Cobos. What a shame that there will no releases of the rest of the Mahler symphonies. The thought breaks my heart. But what a legacy there is on Telarc recorded by these forces!

This swan song CD is a good one, but not up to the best work these musicians have done. That may be partly the fault of Turina, whose music seems OK but uninspired. There is an old saying that the best Spanish Spanish, river, c.150 mi (240 km) long, issuing from Spanish Lake, S Ont., Canada, NW of Sudbury, and flowing generally S through Biskotasi and Agnew lakes to Lake Huron opposite Manitoulin island. There are several hydroelectric stations on the river.  orchestral music was actually written by Frenchmen, and this release could be used as evidence for that assertion. The opening piece, Debussy's Iberia, steals the show. Moving on to the music of Turina is something of a letdown letdown

, quite frankly. If only Telarc could have recorded the complete Images (the suite from which Iberia is the central movement), and left off some of the Turina, that would have been more musically satisfying, but I will give Lopez-Cobos credit for advocating the music of his countryman, and perhaps some of our readers will find Turina's music more to their liking than I did. It actually is nice music, but it just seems to lack the inspiration to be found in the music of Debussy. It sounds more like soundtrack music than serious concert music. (Good soundtrack music, to be sure.)

Lopez-Cobos's interpretation of Iberia seems a bit softer and dreamier than the norm. Reiner, for example, imbues the opening movement (Iberia is something of a three-movement suite that is itself part of a three-movement suite), Par les rues et par les chemins ("On the Highways and Byways") with whipcrack excitement. The orchestral playing is colorful, however, and the softer approach works well in the two succeeding movements. The sound is clean and spacious and clear, but for some reason recorded at a relatively low level, meaning that you will have to set the volume control on your preamplifier Preamplifier

a few dB higher than usual. No harm, no foul -- just as long as you remember to turn it back down before you start playing something else.
