Combat tales and firsthand battlefield experiences bloom early into print, but reasoned analysis of extremely complex events always takes longer. In light of all that, this title is a pleasant surprise. Two professional military historians, William Murray of the Institute for Defense Analysis and General (ret.) Robert Scales of the Army War College, have put together a fairly brief but critical overview of the Iraq War from the standpoint of the Allied forces. The authors are especially good at analyzing just how the American military recovered from its dreary state at the end of the Vietnam War Vietnam War, conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam. , and how new generations of leadership brought about a paradigm shift A dramatic change in methodology or practice.
