, announced today that earnings in the first quarter of 1997 were up 51 percent from a year ago. Net income for the quarter was $30.6 million, $.68 a share, which compares to income from continuing operations continuing operations

Exploration expenses totaled $28.6 million in the current quarter compared to $11.7 million a year ago.
