Murphy's Irish Stout sponsors Stamford's 1st Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade.


STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 13, 1996--As part of its worldwide promotion of St. Patrick's St. Patrick's or Saint Patrick's may refer to:
  • Saint Patrick's Day, named after the saint
  • St. Patrick's Purgatory, an ancient pilgrimage in Lough Derg, County Donegal, Ireland
 Day, Murphy's Irish Stout has undertaken a unique and innovative sponsorship by presenting Stamford's first annual St. Patrick's Day Parade on Sunday, March 17.

Murphy's is working in cooperation with the Stamford St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee, the Stamford Ancient Order of Hibernians The Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) is an Irish-Catholic fraternal organization. Members must be Catholic and either Irish born or of Irish descent. Its largest membership is now in the United States, where it was founded in New York in 1836. , and the Downtown Stamford Downtown Stamford, Connecticut is an economically thriving section of Stamford, Connecticut with major retail establishments, a shopping mall and the headquarters of major corporations, as well as other retail businesses and offices.  Special Services District, in staging this inaugural celebration, which begins at 12 noon.

Previously, Parade Chairman John P. The Murphy's Irish Stout St. Patrick's Day Parade will begin at 12 noon at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church Roman Catholic Church, Christian church headed by the pope, the bishop of Rome (see papacy and Peter, Saint).  raised behind Old Town Hall. The parade will then proceed on Atlantic to the parade reviewing stand on Bedford and Forest Streets where the parade will end. Mayor Dannel Malloy, the first Irish-American to hold that office in recent years, and Catherine Garrett Walsh were selected as grand marshals for Sunday's parade.

"This is a great day for Stamford," said Mayor Malloy, "and it's going to be a lot of fun. We have a large and active Irish-American community, but the parade is a first for the city. I'd like to thank Murphy's Irish Stout for its support as well as the Stamford St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee, the Stamford Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Downtown Stamford Special Services District and all who participate in this historic event."

This year marks the first year that Murphy's is sponsoring and promoting St. Patrick's Day on a worldwide basis. Promotions and other events are taking place in every country that serves Murphy's.

"The reality is that St. Patrick's Day is for everyone," said Bray. "However, we at Murphy's are laying claim to this day based on the heritage and authenticity of our brand."

Murphy's Irish Stout has been brewed for more than 140 years at Murphy Brewery in Cork, Ireland. The brewery was founded in 1856 and today is the most modern brewery in Ireland. Murphy Brewery is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Heineken N.V., the world's second largest brewery.
