Sarah Wilson lives in San Francisco in 1889, with her father, her mother and several of her four older brothers. She has studied law, passed the bar and wants to practice law. The trouble is that women in law are openly ridiculed and discriminated against at this time. Smart, energetic Sarah is not to be deterred and applies for work with a large San Francisco law firm. While applying for the job Sara meets, and offers to help, a wealthy young widow who is being badly handled by the firm. The wealthy widow hires her immediately; and so, despite the protests of the senior partner, the firm finally hires Sarah. When the wealthy widow is accused of having murdered her husband, Sarah knows her to be innocent. With the help of her brothers and some new friends Sarah seeks evidence, in some dangerous places, to support her case.
