guide, Nancy J. Holland, RN, EdD, considers some of the challenges MS can bring to a family. "What happens," she asks, "when a promising career is detoured, resulting in the loss of college funds for the children and retirement income for parents? How do family members feel when their roles begin to shift in response to the demands of the illness? How can a family plan for a future that has been redefined by an unpredictable disease?"

Now in its third edition, Multiple Sclerosis: A Guide for Families faces many such tough questions. Dr. Kalb emphasizes throughout the importance of extensive family discussions.

In addition to Dr. Holland's new Foreword, the third edition offers new chapters addressing potential longterm care needs and parenting a child or teen with MS. Other chapters have been expanded and updated to create a dynamic book that will prove useful to both families living with MS and the professionals who assist them.

Dr. Kalb is director of the Society's Professional Resource Center; Dr. Holland is vice president of Clinical Programs for the Society.
