, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 30, 1997--Creating engaging interactive multimedia learning experiences for corporate audiences is routine for Internal & External Communication Inc. (IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission, Geneva, Switzerland, www.iec.ch) An organization that sets international electrical and electronics standards founded in 1906. It is made up of national committees from over 60 countries.

Recently, though, IEC designed an interactive multimedia learning experience for a new audience: children with serious illnesses.

In partnership with the STARBRIGHT Foundation, a non-profit organization A non-profit organization (abbreviated "NPO", also "non-profit" or "not-for-profit") is a legally constituted organization whose primary objective is to support or to actively engage in activities of public or private interest without any commercial or monetary profit purposes.  for seriously ill A patient is seriously ill when his or her illness is of such severity that there is cause for immediate concern but there is no imminent danger to life. The informational piece is accessible only to children through STARBRIGHT World, a high-bandwidth computer network linking children in hospitals across the country.  will see a special screening of the recently expanded STARBRIGHT World, which now includes the interactive segment about IVs.

The goal of the multimedia piece is to dispel fears about IVs and answer questions that children have surrounding their use. It is hosted by an animated character, aptly named Nurse Ima Helpa. Ima Helpa poses a series of questions, prompting the child to explore his or her feelings about IVs, and provides reassuring information to the child. Kids can even send her messages online. Because some illnesses restrict certain motor skills, the introduction screen offers a choice between text or audio-only versions. Different content appears depending on how a child answers Ima's first question, "Have you ever had an IV?" The cleverly executed piece, featuring custom graphics and Shockwave Flash Shockwave Flash - Flash  animations, also includes jokes and sound effects sound effects

. The multimedia sequence concludes with two instructional videos about the use of IVs, produced with footage provided by STARBRIGHT.

IEC's creatively inspired interactive learning programs have won numerous top industry awards and distinctions. Through its use of engaging media elements and creative themes, IEC has differentiated itself in the corporate arena. The company has developed custom training programs on a wide-range of topics, from teaching core cancer concepts to medical assistants, to coaching business professionals how to overcome conflict in the workplace. IEC's experience addressing serious subjects, by developing creative thematic environments that make the learning experience more agreeable, was well-suited to the STARBRIGHT project.

STARBRIGHT World is just one of the many projects and programs developed by the STARBRIGHT Foundation, chaired by Steven Spielberg Noun 1. Steven Spielberg - United States filmmaker (born in 1947)
