MultiMedia Access announces WorkFone 324; Videoconferencing Accelerator Board helps VARs and system integrators build videocom solutions.

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 5, 1997--Bringing quality videoconferencing to ordinary phone lines, MultiMedia Access Corp. (NASDAQ:MMAC) today announced the Viewpoint WorkFone(R) 324 Videoconferencing Accelerator Board and Software Developer's Kit (SDK).

Using powerful on-board hardware audio and video compression, the WorkFone 324 uses 28.8Kbps modems and telephone lines to provide top quality H.324-compliant video communications for demanding applications.

The powerful hardware compression engine on the Viewpoint WorkFone 324 permits color teleconferencing at a rate of up to 15 frames per second, far exceeding the capability of conventional software compressor/decompressors (codecs). It also provides echo cancellation, a feature not found in most other H.324 compliant products.

Because the WorkFone 324 uses an advanced audio/video compression chip, it doesn't tax the PC's CPU. Software based videoconferencing products use as much as 100% of a Pentium 200's CPU whereas WorkFone 324 uses at most 5% of a Pentium 90.

Operation of the WorkFone 324 is simplified by a graphical interface that reduces setting up a videoconference to a simple push of a button. The WorkFone 324 software includes a snapshot and scrapbook feature, call logging with CallerID and screen based directory dialing. The advanced software of the WorkFone 324 even optimizes the video display to produce the best picture quality possible.

The WorkFone 324, including software, is available as an individual unit, bundled with a V.80 compliant modem, or in a complete teleconferencing kit including modem and video camera. It requires a Pentium based PC with an available PCI slot, VGA Graphics card and V.80 Modem. The suggested list price for the WorkFone 324 codec and software is $399.

MMAC will show the product at DVC West in San Jose, May 19-23.

The WorkFone 324 is available to System Integrators and VARs. The Software Developer Kit (SDK) is available directly from MMAC.
