Multi-layer drug vials use COC moisture barrier.Owens-Illinois Plastics Group's healthcare unit in Toledo, Ohio, has extended its SurShot multi-layer injection technology to cover injection-blow molding of 3-cc to 250-cc drug vials. The technology had hitherto been limited to multi-layer preforms for stretch-blown bottles. Cyclic olefin copolymer Cyclic Olefin Copolymer (COC) is an amorphous polymer made by several polymer manufacturers. COC is a relatively new class of polymers when compared to polypropylene and polyethylene. (COC See chip on chip. ) from Ticona LLC (Logical Link Control) See "LANs" under data link protocol.LLC - Logical Link Control , Summit, N.J., is the barrier resin. Bill Negrini, v.p. of the healthcare unit, calls O-I's technology the sole alternative to glass for packaging injectable drugs, diluents, and other products prone to moisture loss. One vial has a COC core sandwiched between PE or PC skins. In others, COC skin layers protect a specialty nylon core that provides an oxygen barrier. The structures retain good clarity during sterilization sterilization Any surgical procedure intended to end fertility permanently (see contraception). Such operations remove or interrupt the anatomical pathways through which the cells involved in fertilization travel (see reproductive system). . Vial walls are 0.002 to 0.006 in. thick. O-I claims its approach keeps barrier material to 2% by weight, holding down cost. Ticona: (800) 833-4882, www.ticona.com [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] |
