Multi-Tech announces voice data fax concentrator for telecommuters.

MOUNDS VIEW, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 6, 1995--Multi-Tech Systems Inc., a leading data communications technology company, announces a new simultaneous voice and data See SVD.  MultiMux concentrator that extends office tools to a user's home or any other distant location.

By bridging LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. , PBX (Private Branch eXchange) An inhouse telephone switching system that interconnects telephone extensions to each other as well as to the outside telephone network (PSTN). , fax, E-mail, and any other information resources over a telecommunications live, the single channel model MMV101 concentrates voice, data, and fax communications onto a single, more efficient communications line. The communications line may be analog, ISDN ISDN

, Switched 56, fractional T1, or any other service using appropriate DSUs operating up to 128K bps.

Data input can be up to 128K bps synchronous or 115K bps asynchronous Refers to events that are not synchronized, or coordinated, in time. The following are considered asynchronous operations. The interval between transmitting A and B is not the same as between B and C. The ability to initiate a transmission at either end. . The voice/fax interface can be to a PBX, key system, or telephone set which uses a standard FXO (PBX station side) or FXS (e.g. telephone set) interface.

The two primary applications for the single channel MultiMux are to extend office functionality (voice, data, and fax) to a remote location (telecommuting) and to add voice and fax to any existing asynchronous or synchronous data communications link. The MMV101 costs $1,299 U.S. (not including optional V.34 internal modem or 56K DDS (1) (Digital Data Storage) See DAT.

``The demand for extending office functionality to remote locations is just starting,'' stated Raghu Sharma, president of Multi-Tech Systems Inc. ``Companies that are embracing telecommuting now, because it makes good business sense with reduced facilities and better productivity, are in the forefront of tomorrow's business environment.

``In addition to making telecommuters more efficient by giving them the services of the main office, the new MultiMux adds voice and fax to any existing SDLC (Synchronous Data Link Control) The primary data link protocol used in IBM's SNA networks. It is a bit-oriented synchronous protocol that is a subset of the HDLC protocol. See SNA, DLC and Microsoft DLC.

communication line, and pays for itself in free calls. If you have LANs bridged or your organization uses IBM SNA networks, they are probably SDLC-based.

``With a pair of MultiMuxes for each link, you can add voice and fax traffic to the same link virtually free. Depending on how much voice and data traffic exists, the MultiMuxes could pay for themselves in a matter of weeks.''

The new MMV101 single channel MultiMux is a concentrator product that combines voice, data, and fax traffic over a single telecommunicati ons line. The V.35 or RS232-compatible composite link can operate with either external 4-wire synchronous modems, or eternal DSU/CSUs up to 128K bps. The MMV101s can be equipped with internal DSUs or modems.

The internal DSU option is designed for operation over AT&T's DATAPHONE Digital Service (communications, product) Dataphone Digital Service - (DDS) The first private-line digital service offered by AT&T, with data rates typically at 2.4, 4.8, 9.6 and 56 kilobits per second. DDS is now part of AT&T's Accunet family of services.  (DDS) or equivalent digital data services. The internal modem option is a 28.8K bps ITU compliant V.34 modem.

The MMV101s feature SDLC synchronous input channel speeds of up to 128K bps, asynchronous input channel speeds up to 115K bps, hardware and software flow control, EIA (Electronic Industries Alliance, Arlington, VA, www.eia.org) A membership organization founded in 1924 as the Radio Manufacturing Association. It sets standards for consumer products and electronic components.  pass-through, downline parameter loading, channel pacing, operational statistics, and full system diagnostics.

The new MultiMux provides two voice/fax channels with all the necessary interfaces to access PBX, fax, and telephone services. Each channel has two RJ11 connectors, for FXO (PBX station side) and FXS (e.g. telephone set). The new MultiMux is totally software configurable for selecting items such as compression rate, interface type, volume control, voice link selection, and destination.
