Multi-Reactive Treatment Barrier Successfully Treats TCE Contamination.Adventus and ARS Technologies Announce the Successful Completion of Canadian PRB PRB Pharmaceutical Resources Branch Project NEW BRUNSWICK New Brunswick, province, Canada New Brunswick, province (2001 pop. 729,498), 28,345 sq mi (73,433 sq km), including 519 sq mi (1,345 sq km) of water surface, E Canada. , N.J. & TORONTO -- ARS Technologies (ARS) and The Adventus Group have announced the completion of their first joint project integrating the firms' environmental treatment technologies. The project, completed for a Canadian government agency, consisted of the installation of a pilot-scale multi-reactive treatment barrier at a facility in Quebec, Canada. The project site is an active facility that has a TCE TCE trichloroethylene. TCE Environment A volatile chlorinated hydrocarbon that boils at 88ºC and is highly soluble–1000 ppm in water, with various industrial uses Toxicity Peripheral neuropathy, carcinogenic. plume migrating to a local river. The plume is about 2.2 km (1.5 miles) long and has three large source areas and a few smaller source areas. The three source areas co-mingle to form one large plume. The geology of the site is comprised of sands and gravels over bedrock with small localized inclusions of silts and clays. Groundwater velocity is estimated at 1 to 3 feet per day. Depth to bedrock varies but is 95 to 130 feet bgs. A low permeability clay-till layer is located at about 81 feet bgs. The water table is about 30 feet bgs. TCE concentrations in the pilot test area are as high as 680 micrograms per liter, but average around 100 to 200 micrograms per liter. The installed system will be monitored for the next 10 months as part of an ongoing technology evaluation program. The installation was implemented by ARS as part of a corrective measure study to assess the effectiveness of Pneumatic Fracturing/Liquid Atomized Injection (PF/LAI) and In-Situ Chemical Reduction (ISCR ISCR Investor Summit on Climate Risk ) emplacing a mixture of zero valent iron (ZVI ZVI Zero-Valent Iron ZVI Zone of Visual Influence ZVI Zoomed Video Interface ) powder and Adventus' EHC EHC Environmental Health Criteria EHC Environmental Health Center (NSC) EHC Eishockeyclub (German) EHC Extended Health Care (Plan) EHC Emory and Henry College bioremediation bi·o·re·me·di·a·tion n. Field operations at the site were performed from June 19 through July 15, 2006. Field work began with installation of twelve injection boreholes to depths as great as 83 feet, in a 125 feet long by 25 feet wide treatment area. The reactive materials were injected by ARS Technologies' patented emplacement technology termed "Liquid Atomization Atomization The process whereby a bulk liquid is transformed into a multiplicity of small drops. This transformation, often called primary atomization, proceeds through the formation of disturbances on the surface of the bulk liquid, followed by their Injection" (LAI LAI Leaf Area Index LAI Lean Advancement Initiative (MIT) LAI Lean Aerospace Initiative LAI Long-Acting Injection LAI Lambda Alpha International (honorary land economics society) ) using bulk nitrogen gas to maximize the extent and uniformity of reactive medium distribution. The gas was injected at flow rates ranging from 300 to 800 scfm using a proprietary high-pressure pneumatic injection module designed to regulate the high flow rate. The gas served to drive and disperse the EHC and ZVI powder into the formation. PF/LAI may be applied by a steady stream of nitrogen or a pulsing method in response to formation characteristics at specific intervals or depths. Injections were performed in discrete 3.5-ft intervals in order to isolate and concentrate the energy of the nitrogen for better distribution. Ten to fifteen injections were conducted in each of the twelve injection locations. Over four weeks, a total of 64,877 pounds of ZVI and 26,645 pounds of EHC material were emplaced directly in the aquifer. "We're pleased to be to working with our partner, Adventus, here at this site," said Mike Liskowitz, ARS Project Manager. "This deep application project represents the first EHC/ZVI barrier installed using our proprietary gas atomized injection method. With the results of this project, we look forward to working with Adventus in extending the applicability of their treatment products to deeper and more complex geology sites." David Hill, Adventus' Director of Operations, added "Through our acquisition of EnviroMetal Technologies Inc., we were certainly aware of ARS' capabilities to inject ZVI at significant depths. This demonstration confirmed the efficacy of their methods for emplacement of EHC, which will broaden the scope of subsurface environments where EHC can be used to effectively treat groundwater contamination of both CVOCs and trace metals with our EHC-M product."
