It has also reached into the community with environmental initiatives. And its 2001 expansion into Prospect Bowl has been called the most environmentally sensitive terrain expansion in North America. "Prospect Bowl is an amazing story -- but not the whole story -- on Telluride's 'paradigm shift' toward sustainability and environmental stewardship," said the judges. Environmental Excellence in Fish & Wildlife Habitat Protection In a strong field, state-owned Whiteface stands apart by completing a weir to monitor snowmaking water withdrawals from the Ausable, one of America's most prized trout streams. With the system, Whiteface can suspend withdrawals whenever the river reaches a critically low stage. The weir is a run-of-the-river structure and offers no barriers to migrating trout. "Whiteface followed a painstaking four-year design, permit and bid process to build this one-of-a-kind system," said the judges. Finalists: Lake Louise Ski Area, Alb., Aspen Skiing Company, Colo. Silver Eagle Award-Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation, Colo. Environmental Excellence in Education Steamboat's environmental program reaches out to school and youth groups, the local community, employees and visitors to better help them understand and appreciate the alpine environment. With more than 20 individual efforts, from tree planting to creek rehabilitation and from monetary contributions to nature trails on the mountain, Steamboat makes environmental education a daily effort. "The breadth of their programs was superior," said the judges. Finalists: Vail Mountain, Colo., Whistler/Blackcomb, B.C. Silver Eagle Award-Heavenly Ski Resort, Calif. Environmental Excellence in Visual Impact In an extremely strong group of applications, Heavenly's meticulous attention to detail in constructing a gondola from Stateside's Park Avenue Redevelopment Project to the resort rises above the others. The lift is low profile in design and the liftline was minimally cleared. Lift towers, cabins, the mid-station and an observation deck were all painted to mute their visibility. No access roads were cut for the construction; materials and equipment were either helicoptered or carried in, and construction workers walked to and from the site. The gondola also takes 7,000 cars off the roads at peak times. "Great response in a difficult environment," said the judges. Finalists: Sunshine Village Ski Corporation, Alb., Snowbird snowbird: see junco. Ski & Summer Resort, Utah Silver Eagle Award-Whistler/Blackcomb, B.C. And it keeps coming up with new chapters. It is now working with members of the community to make Whistler the first sustainable resort community in the world through its "Whistler. It's Our Nature" initiative. "Whistler has once again demonstrated that a for-profit company can be environmentally responsible by being responsive to the concerns and needs of those with an interest in the resort's operations," said the judges. Finalists: Aspen Skiing Company, Colo., Breckenridge, Colo. Silver Eagle Award-Keystone Resort, Colo. Excellence in Waste Reduction & Recycling Recycling is a way of life at Keystone: Its programs cover 25 different types of waste, from scrap metal to horse manure and from bamboo poles to tennis balls. The recycling efforts, begun in 1992, reach out to the community, to employees and to guests. They are closely monitored by the resort, which is now recycling an impressive 25 percent of its waste -- or 2.5 pounds per skier day. "Keystone has carefully analyzed its waste production to find more ways of trimming the fat than anyone else," said the judges. Finalists: Mammoth Mountain Ski Area The Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is a large ski resort located in eastern California on the east side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the Inyo National Forest.
