Macro(TM) posted a return of 52.4%, net of fees or expenses, for 2003, its strongest performance since 2001's 53.1% return. Mount Lucas, a leading provider of hedge fund hedge fund, in finance, a highly speculative, largely unregulated investment device. Originating in the 1950s, the funds "hedge" by offsetting "short" positions (borrowing a security and then selling it at a higher price before repaying the lender) against "long"  investment programs for institutions and qualified high net worth investors, attributes the strong performance in 2003 to early bets on the accelerating economic recovery in the U.S. and the impact of China's increased demand for physical commodities.

Tim Rudderow, President of Mount Lucas, attributes the overall success of the firm's global macro strategy Global Macro Strategy

But, he notes, commodities are the key to the China market right now. "Success as a China investor requires a deep understanding of China's voracious voracious
