Motorola to Build Secure Network for Canadian Defence Department; Advanced System to Provide Secure Communications Across Canada.

Motorola Tuesday announced that the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) has selected the Motorola Military Message Handling System (MMHS), an advanced Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) technology solution, to provide secure information networking services.

Motorola will provide the secure communications technology, large-scale systems integration and lead a team of world-class partners to build the $26 million (USD) network.

The Motorola MMHS is a secure e-mail system that will replace several legacy systems with newer, open-standard protocols permitting the interconnection of multiple domains at various security levels. The MMHS provides full military messaging capabilities and will enable Canadian defense forces to communicate between SECRET and protected domains.

By deploying this COTS-based solution, the Canadian DND will be able to keep pace with the latest advances in Information Technology (IT) and realize a significant cost reduction in terms of the overhead required to operate the system.

To migrate the Canadian DND's secure message traffic from the current legacy systems to the advanced MMHS solution, Motorola will perform the systems integration through a multi-phased, interactive approach. This migration strategy is designed to provide customers with continuous communications throughout the network deployment phase.

Canadian Department of National Defence MMHS Partners

Motorola will deliver this advanced solution to the Canadian DND with contributions from the following world-class partners:

ADGA Group Consultants Inc., of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, will conduct system installation, deployment and operator training.

ALBION Group-Canada Inc., of Manotick, Ontario, Canada, will provide Industrial and Regional Benefits (IRB) management and consulting.

Desert Sky Software, of Phoenix, will build the MMHS Website for the customer.

EMCON Emanation Control Limited, of Ottawa, will deliver the commercial and TEMPEST qualified workstations subsystems.

HVR-Canada Inc., of Ottawa, will perform independent risk and problem reporting management support.

Lexi-Tech International, of Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, will provide the English-to-French translation services.

NEXOR LTD, of Nottingham, United Kingdom, will deliver the COTS military standards-based electronic messaging and directory components at the core of the solution.

Northrop Grumman, California Microwave Systems, of Woodland Hills, Calif., will provide the mail list agent, functional converter and profiling user agent.

Wang Government Services Inc., of McLean, Va., will provide the XTS-300 firewall, a multi-level secure platform that is rated B3 by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) in accordance with the Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria, to assure that only messages with the proper format and labeling are permitted to enter the system.
