"With this expansion, MTC will be able to accommodate an increasing number of new subscribers, while also offering the enhanced digital features that GSM technology provides." The digital cellular system was initially deployed by Motorola in November, 1994 to serve 50,000 subscribers. In 1995, ICIG expanded the system to provide digital cellular service to an additional 50,000 subscribers in Kuwait, helping to accommodate the increasing subscriber demand. GSM is a digital cellular standard based on an open architecture network. To date, Motorola has contracts to supply GSM in 14 countries in the Middle East and Africa and contracts to provide GSM in more than 40 countries worldwide.
