Motorola introduces 68HC05 microcontroller ideal for industrial motor control and power supply applications.AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 21, 1997-- Highly integrated, low-cost chip to feature PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) A modulation technique that generates variable-width pulses to represent the amplitude of an analog input signal. Like its fixed-width pulse density modulation (PDM) cousin, the output switching transistor is on more of the time for a module with commutation mux for brushless permanent magnet motor control Motorola Inc.'s Customer Specified Integrated Circuits (CISC (Complex Instruction Set Computer) Pronounced "sisk." The traditional architecture of a computer which uses microcode to execute very comprehensive instructions. ) Divisions Tuesday announced a new version of its popular 68HC05 family of 8-bit microcontroller units (MCUs). The new device, the 68HC705MC4, is designed for motor control in appliances (variable speed HVAC (Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning) In the home or small office with a handful of computers, HVAC is more for human comfort than the machines. In large datacenters, a humidity-free room with a steady, cool temperature is essential for the trouble-free and refrigerator compressors, variable speed fans, washing machine drives), servo motors and power supply control. Based on Motorola's industry-standard 68HC05 core, the 68HC705MC4 is a one-time programmable (OTP (1) (One Time Programmable) Refers to programming content or logic into chips such as EPROMs and EEPROMs, which cannot be reversed. See antifuse. (2) (One Time P ) microcontroller which features an 8-bit, dual channel, high speed, pulse width modulator (PWM). The PWM can operate at two frequency ranges: from 183 Hz to 23 KHz and from 122 Hz to 15.6 KHz. The PWM also includes a software programmable commutation multiplexor, integrated onto the chip, for brushless permanent magnet motor control. Additional features include an 8-bit A/D converter to accommodate analog feedback signals, and a serial communications interface Serial Communications Interface - UART (SCI (Scalable Coherent Interface) An IEEE standard for a high-speed bus that uses wire or fiber-optic cable. It can transfer data up to 1GBytes/sec. (hardware) SCI - 1. Scalable Coherent Interface. 2. UART. ) to support multi-controller networking. The microcontroller also includes two timers that can monitor feedback and generate real-time interrupts and timed pulses. "The 68HC705MC4 microcontroller is a key element in providing new features, better control and a higher degree of efficiency on motor controls," said Scott Ballantyne, worldwide marketing manager for Motorola's CSIC (Customer Specific Integrated Circuit) Pronounced "c-sick." Another term for ASIC, which was coined by Motorola. Some feel this is a more accurate description of an ASIC chip. See ASIC. Automotive and Industrial Microcontroller Division. "As customers demand more features and variable speed control, and manufacturers search for lower cost solutions, the 68HC705MC4 can transform the electric motor into a more energy efficient, cost-effective machine." Price and Availability Available in a 28-pin SOIC (Small Outline IC) A small-dimension, plastic, rectangular, surface mount chip package that uses gull-wing pins extending outward. See gull-wing lead, SOJ and chip package. or DIP package and windowed ceramic package, Motorola's 68HC705MC4 has a suggested list price of under $6 in 10K quantities. A ROM version is currently being planned. A comprehensive line of Motorola development tools is currently available, including the popular high-performance Motorola Modular Evaluation System (MMEVS MMEVS Motorola Modular Evaluation System ), as well as a low-cost programmer. Additionally, an extensive line of tool support is available from third-party vendors. The CSIC Microcontroller Divisions are business units within Motorola's Microcontroller Technologies Group, with headquarters in Austin. Motorola is the leader in microcontroller sales worldwide with approximately 18 percent of the 1995 microcontroller market, according to an In-Stat report. With 1995 worldwide sales of $8.5 billion, Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector is the largest U.S.-based broad line supplier of semiconductor solutions. Motorola is one of the world's leading providers of wireless communications, semiconductors and advanced electronic systems, components and services. Major equipment businesses include cellular telephone, two-way radio, paging and data communications, personal communications, automotive, defense and space electronics and computers. Motorola semiconductors power communication devices, computers and millions of other products. Motorola's 1995 sales were $27 billion.
