Motorola Receives '2006 Corporate Award' from the IEEE Standards Association.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Motorola, Inc., has received the 2006 IEEE Standards Association The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association (IEEE-SA) is a leading developer of global industry standards in a broad-range of industries, including:
  • Power and Energy
  • Biomedical and Healthcare
  • Information Technology
(IEEE-SA IEEE-SA Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers-Standard Association ) Corporate Award in recognition of its "outstanding contributions to IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  standards, which allow people to be mobile and connected across the globe."

Motorola has been a leader in the creation of many IEEE standards. Most significantly, it has contributed substantially to the broad family of IEEE 802[TM] wireless standards by participating in over 50 IEEE 802[TM] working groups and task groups. For instance, it has held numerous leadership positions in working groups for IEEE 802.11[TM] (local area networks), IEEE 802.15[TM] (personal area networks), IEEE 802.16[TM] (metropolitan area networks) and IEEE 802.22[TM] (regional area networks) standards.

Motorola was the driving force behind IEEE's groundbreaking standards work in nanotechnology and battery standards. It also holds many key positions in IEEE governance organizations, such as the Industry Standards and Technology Organization, the Corporate Advisory Group, the IEEE Standards Association Standards Board, the IEEE Communications Society The IEEE Communications Society is a society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). It is also known by it the abbreviation ComSoc. In the hierarchy of IEEE, the Communication Society is one of close to 40 technical societies organized under the  Standards Board and the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) was founded in 1949 as the Institute of Radio Engineers' (IRE) Committee on Vehicular and Railroad Radio. The Society's name has changed five times since then and its scope has expanded to include not only the "Radio" of the .

"This award honors Motorola for its dedication in partnering with us to create standards for diverse electronic components, devices and systems," says Judy Gorman, Managing Director of IEEE-SA. "Many of these industry standards have opened markets for new technologies that have changed people's lives in fundamental ways and have allowed them to be connected wherever they are.

"Motorola's leadership and uncompromising support of our vision and mission have helped us become a world-class standards organization A standards organization, also sometimes referred to as a standards body, a standards development organization or SDO (depending on what is being referenced), is any entity whose primary activities are developing, coordinating, promulgating, revising, amending, . Their support has also enabled us to reach many of our strategic goals, such as creating the IEEE-SA Corporate Program and strengthening our alliances with other standards bodies Following are some of the standards bodies defined in this database. For Windows users of CDE, look up Lessons/Review/Associations. For Web users of CDE's online HTML version, review the Lessons list at the bottom of the definition.

 worldwide."

"We are pleased to receive this recognition for our partnership with the IEEE to create quality, world-class standards," said Mike Pellon, Vice President of Standards at Motorola. "This award demonstrates our commitment to technology innovation and open standards Specifications for hardware and software that are developed by a standards organization or a consortium involved in supporting a standard. Available to the public for developing compliant products, open standards imply "open systems;" that an existing component in a system can be replaced  that enable a large, global, multi-vendor marketplace. It's an honor to be recognized for our contributions and leadership in the many IEEE standards that shape the convergence of mobile cellular telephony, IT-based broadband wireless, and consumer electronics industries."

About the IEEE Standards Association

The IEEE Standards Association, a globally recognized standards-setting body, develops consensus standards through an open process that brings diverse parts of an industry together. These standards set specifications and procedures based on current scientific consensus. The IEEE-SA has a portfolio of more than 870 completed standards and more than 400 standards in development. For information on IEEE-SA see: http://standards.ieee.org/.

About the IEEE

The IEEE has more than 375,000 members in approximately 150 countries. Through its members, the organization is a leading authority on areas ranging from aerospace, computers and telecommunications to biomedicine biomedicine /bio·med·i·cine/ (bi?o-med´i-sin) clinical medicine based on the principles of the natural sciences (biology, biochemistry, etc.).biomed´ical
