Objectivity, Inc., the leading provider of distributed, scalable object databases for solutions providers, today announced Objectivity/DB is the Object-Oriented Database Management System used as a data repository for system component naming, satellite mission planning data, and orbital management data deployed by Motorola in The Iridium(R) System.

The Iridium System began providing global communications on November 1, 1998. Objectivity/DB is a critical component in the Iridium $5 billion project that manages the complex network of satellites and ground stations.

The Iridium System's satellite-based wireless personal communications network permits any type of telephone transmission to reach its destination virtually anywhere on Earth. The Iridium System consists of 66 low-orbit satellites. Subscribers use pocket-sized Iridium telephones, transmitting through digital facilities, to communicate with any other phone in the world. The Iridium System tracks the telephone handset's location, providing global transmission even if the subscriber's location is unknown.
