Motorola Awarded Its First Smart Card Automated Fare Collection Contract in China.

NANJING, China--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 20, 1999--

Public transit riders in Nanjing will soon join other technology-leading cities by adopting a smart card-based automated fare collection system The Automated Fare Collection System (AFC) is the name given to three interoperable automated ticketing systems for government-run buses, trains and ferries in and around Sydney, Australia. . Today, Motorola, Inc. and Nanjing Public Transit IC Card Co., Ltd. have signed a cooperative agreement to design and implement an integrated smart card system called the Nanjing Public Transit Automated Fare Collection (AFC (1) (Application Foundation Classes) A class library from Microsoft that provides an application framework and graphics, graphical user interface (GUI) and multimedia routines for Java programmers. ) project. The agreement covers Phase I of a multi-phased effort to implement smart cards Example of widely used contactless smart cards are Hong Kong's Octopus card, Paris' Calypso/Navigo card and Lisbon' LisboaViva card, which predate the ISO/IEC 14443 standard. The following tables list smart cards used for public transportation and other electronic purse applications.  as a form of payment for the entire city public transport network that includes buses, ferries and the Metro subway subway: see rapid transit.

The first phase of the Nanjing AFC project is intended to enhance bus service in the city with a cutting-edge smart card solution that provides riders with a convenient and easy way to pay for public transport. With the new system, riders will buy and re-load their smart cards at stationary ticketing machines located around the city. In addition to improving the way its riders pay for public transport, Nanjing Public Transit is also funding the system in an effort to consolidate and improve the efficiencies of its fare collection system.

"We are making an effort to help Nanjing residents enjoy a better city life," said Zhu Ziqiang, director of the Nanjing Public Utility Bureau. "We expect that our Public Utility will grow vigorously in 21st century and we believe that the cooperation with Motorola is a good beginning. We hope to further enhance the informationalization of the city public utility through this joint effort."

A field trial of the system is scheduled to begin in March of 2000 and last three months, with full-system implementation planned for July of 2000. During Phase I of the project, Motorola will design and implement the smart card system for all three bus companies currently operating within the bus system of Nanjing providing more than 2,000 bus validators and issuing 400,000 Motorola M-Smart Mercury(TM) contactless smart cards A smart card that uses radio frequencies to provide a wireless connection to the reader. The transmission range is only a couple of inches, but allows the card to be quickly passed by a reader in applications such as secured entrances. See smart card and UltraCard.  to riders. Once the system is implemented, riders will simply wave their cards in front of a validator to board the bus - making their commute TO COMMUTE. To substitute one punishment in the place of another. For example, if a man be sentenced to be hung, the executive may, in some states, commute his punishment to that of imprisonment.  more convenient and efficient.

"Motorola is delighted to receive its first smart card system award in China and we are equally pleased to involve local partners in this significant opportunity," said Francois Dutray, Motorola vice president and general manager, Worldwide Smartcard Solutions Division. "As Motorola continues its efforts to drive the global adoption of smart cards, we are eager to provide the benefits of our smart card solutions to the transit authority and riders of the progressive city of Nanjing."

The system design, integration, implementation, training and system maintenance will be managed on behalf of Motorola by Huamin Smart Card Systems Co., Ltd. - a joint-venture company established by Motorola and Huaxu Golden Card Co., Ltd. last year. Motorola also has contracted with Nanjing Eastide Co., Ltd. to integrate the components for the validators and to establish an after-sale maintenance center in support of the Nanjing AFC project.
