Motion picture distributors: ranked by 2007 domestic box office revenue.EXECUTIVE SUMMARY U .S. moviegoers spent $9.23 billion at the box office in 2007, topping the $9 billion mark for the second consecutive year. Six distributors registered at least $1 billion in 2007, representing the first time that six studios reached that total domestically. Paramount and its subsidiary DreamWorks, which it acquired in 2006, took the top spot among domestic distributors in 2007, with $1.49 billion in box office revenues. The company had two films gross more than $300 million domestically in 2007. Warner Bros. Domestic Theatrical Distribution claimed the second spot in domestic box office. The Burbank-based distributor registered the highest worldwide box office total, grossing more than $2 billion. For Sony Pictures Releasing, "Spider-Man 3" was the highest grossing movie of 2007, bringing in $337 million. It had the largest opening weekend of any film last year, bringing in $151 million during its May 4-6 debut. However, it was not nearly enough to keep the distributor from falling to fourth after being the top domestic distributor in 2006. Sequels dominated the top grossing films, accounting for five of the top six domestic films in 2007. Two companies joined the 10 highest grossing distributors in 2007. No. 9 MGM Distribution grossed $363 million domestically. News Corp. subsidiary Fox Searchlight rounded out the list with $136 million. [GRAPHICS OMITTED] THE PACESETTER PARAMOUNT Domestic Distribution tops the list of the largest movie distributors ranked by 2007 domestic box office revenue. It grossed approximately $1.5 billion last year. The Viacom Inc. subsidiary benefited from the acquisition of DreamWorks SKG in 2006. The takeover added multiple films to its portfolio and brought executives Steven Spielberg and David Geffen to its personnel. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] The company topped the 2007 box office with the support of the second- and third-highest grossing films of the year. The company distributed "Shrek the Third," which grossed $323 million and was produced by DreamWorks Animation SKG. The movie spent one week as the top film, grossing $122 million during its opening weekend in May. "Transformers" was produced by Paramount in conjunction with DreamWorks and grossed $319 million at the domestic box office. It had a holiday release over the Fourth of July weekend and grossed more than $150 million during its first week. It also held the top spot for one week. Both of the animated films should see additions to their franchises. Paramount has plans for a fourth Shrek film while Transformers 2 has been discussed, but is not yet slated for production. Paramount crossed the $1 billion threshold for just the second time. It had previously reached that plateau in 1998 when it released "Titanic."
