That's how author Raymond Arroyo describes Mother Angelica, the subject of a book that's landed on several bestseller lists, including The New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of Times'. Whatever your feelings about Mother Angelica--and people tend to have strong ones, pro or con--most would have to agree that she has had a lot of power. As the founder of Eternal Word Television Network The Eternal Word Television Network ("EWTN") is a U.S.-based broadcasting network that carries Catholic-themed programming, including a Daily Mass from its Birmingham, Alabama Monastery/Studios, talk shows such as EWTN Live and Sunday Night Live, , the world's largest religious media empire, it's probably fair to say that she has influenced more Catholics (and non-Catholics) than anyone other than the pope. How did she get so powerful? Born to working-class parents in Canton, Ohio Canton is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Stark CountyGR6. Instead Arroyos prose is laced with thinly veiled hagiographic hag·i·og·ra·phy n. pl. hag·i·og·ra·phies 1. Biography of saints. 2. A worshipful or idealizing biography. hag comments, even when describing her conflicts with U.S. bishops or her flip-flopping on matters like the modified habit. The publisher insists the book is objective journalism, but clearly Arroyo--an employee of EWTN--is a fan of "Mother." What he attributes to divine providence--a $2 million check coming just when the network is teetering on the verge On the Verge (or The Geography of Yearning) is a play written by Eric Overmyer. It makes extensive use of esoteric language and pop culture references from the late nineteenth century to 1955. of bankruptcy, for example--could also be seen as the result of Mother Angelicas shrewd cultivation of millionaires. Still, if you can wade through the sappy reports of supposed miracles and the gushing gush v. gushed, gush·ing, gush·es v.intr. 1. To flow forth suddenly in great volume: water gushing from a hydrant. 2. of fellow sisters and other fans, readers will find some insight into the woman who, for better or worse, has shaped the church for the next generation. |
