Most crop producers cash in.At a recent seminar it held for its land-owner clients, an executive of one of the nation's largest professional farm management firms presented an analysis showing many ag producers made a lot of money from the 2006 crop. And he meant A LOT of money--almost more than a 10-fold increase over 2005! His report showed that a typical 1,000 acre corn/ soybean soybean, soya bean, or soy pea, leguminous plant (Glycine max, G. soja, or Soja max) of the family Leguminosae (pulse family), native to tropical and warm temperate regions of Asia, where it has been producer netted $32,000 for their 2005 crop. With today's corn selling for $3+/bu. and soybeans at $8/bushel, that same producer probably netted $325,000 for their 2006 crop. Of course, that was before the increased costs they face this year, including a nearly doubling of fertilizer prices, an anticipated 20% increase for seed/traits, and significantly higher land rental rates. But, even with those increased costs, it is expected agri-marketers will have an economically strong customer base in which they can operate to provide products and services for the 2008 planting season. LATE SUMMER IS THE BEST This is a great time of year for those of us who are close observers of the industry. The summer issues of the ag publications are now out, brimming with ads, from marketers of seed, traits, crop protection, equipment and other providers, staking their turf and making their statements. One astute veteran reports it is interesting to see the trait suppliers are now laying claim of producing the healthiest set of corn roots in the country. He likened it to the days when that fight that was being fought among suppliers of chemical insecticides. Visible proof of how technology, and times, have changed.
