MOSAID Technologies Incorporated (MSD - TSE) will design the next generation of Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory (storage) Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory - (SDRAM, Synchronous DRAM) A form of DRAM which adds a separate clock signal to the control signals. SDRAM chips can contain more complex state machines, allowing them to support "burst" access modes that clock out a series of  on behalf of the SLDRAM (Synchronous Link DRAM) An enhanced version of SDRAM memory that uses a multiplexed bus to transfer data to and from the chips rather than fixed pin settings. Similar to Rambus DRAM (RDRAM), but not proprietary, SLDRAM never came to fruition.  Consortium. The SLDRAM Consortium (formerly known as SynchLink), is comprised of the world's top computer and DRAM suppliers as well as MOSAID.

SLDRAMs provide high performance solutions for computer main memory by enabling bus data rates from 400 to 800 megahertz. This represents anywhere from a four to eight-fold improvement over current memory systems. SLDRAMs are particularly well suited for high end personal computers, servers, workstations and consumer electronics.

To develop the industry prototype, MOSAID is using an advanced 0.25 micron DRAM process developed jointly by Siemens, IBM and Toshiba. In the coming weeks, Siemens and other Consortium members will contribute engineering expertise to the project. Representatives from these companies will join MOSAID in performing the design work in Ottawa.

"The initiative will ensure that the industry will be in a position to meet or exceed performance requirements for servers, workstations and high-end PC's by 1999," said Dr. Richard Foss, Chairman of MOSAID. "It will ensure a robust successor to SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM) A type of dynamic RAM (DRAM) memory chip that has been widely used since the late 1990s. SDRAM chips eliminated wait states by dividing the chip into two cell blocks and interleaving data between them.  (Synchronous DRAM) for the next century. MOSAID is proud to play such a pivotal role in its development."

MOSAID will assign to the SLDRAM Consortium all new Intellectual Property created in the course of developing the prototype. Free access to this intellectual property by memory manufacturers through the Consortium will accelerate adoption by the electronics industry of the open standard for SLDRAM. "MOSAID believes that our customers' success is our success. The way forward for our industry must be based on open standards with individual companies competing to offer the best and lowest cost implementations to such standards. In over 20 years MOSAID has consistently shown it can deliver the best in such efforts and we confidently expect to go on doing it," said Dr. Foss.

MOSAID Technologies Incorporated is a leading independent memory chip design house and the leading supplier of engineering memory test systems. The company designs advanced chips for standard memory and Application Specific Memory (ASM) requirements and also designs, manufactures and distributes engineering test systems for memory chips.

Background: SLDRAM Consortium

The mission of the SLDRAM Consortium is to define the next-generation, high-performance, scaleable, open-standard memory architecture. The Consortium was formed to bring users and producers together. Performance requirements for main memory chips are now increasing exponentially. The last broadly successful effort to meet these requirements was the Synchronous DRAM (SDRAM) now being adopted for general use in place of regular EDO DRAM. The introduction of SDRAM demonstrated the need for closer cooperation between major suppliers and systems users. The SLDRAM Consortium was created to ensure a stronger focus on system level issues.

Working together the Consortium has defined an SLDRAM chip, its future road map and the electrical interface specification for the memory system bus. This memory system bus is an enhancement of the SSTL SSTL Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd
