SLDRAMs provide high performance solutions for computer main memory by enabling bus data rates from 400 to 800 megahertz. This represents anywhere from a four to eight-fold improvement over current memory systems. SLDRAMs are particularly well suited for high end personal computers, servers, workstations and consumer electronics.
To develop the industry prototype, MOSAID is using an advanced 0.25 micron DRAM process developed jointly by Siemens, IBM and Toshiba. In the coming weeks, Siemens and other Consortium members will contribute engineering expertise to the project. Representatives from these companies will join MOSAID in performing the design work in Ottawa.

MOSAID will assign to the SLDRAM Consortium all new Intellectual Property created in the course of developing the prototype. Free access to this intellectual property by memory manufacturers through the Consortium will accelerate adoption by the electronics industry of the open standard for SLDRAM. Performance requirements for main memory chips are now increasing exponentially. The last broadly successful effort to meet these requirements was the Synchronous DRAM (SDRAM) now being adopted for general use in place of regular EDO DRAM. The introduction of SDRAM demonstrated the need for closer cooperation between major suppliers and systems users. The SLDRAM Consortium was created to ensure a stronger focus on system level issues.
