Morinaga Milk Announces Research Results of Lactoferrin on Peridontal Disease.


Tokyo, Japan, Oct 24, 2006 - (JCN) - Morinaga Milk Industry Morinaga Milk Industry Co., Ltd. (森永乳業株式会社   Co., Ltd., in collaboration with the University of Niigata announced its joint research result of lactoferrin's effect on periodontal disease.

Lactoferrin lactoferrin
(lak´tōfer´in),
n an iron-binding protein found in the specific granules of neutrophils where it apparently exerts an antimicrobial activity by withholding iron from ingested bacteria and fungi.
, a protein derived from dairy products was found to suppress prevotella intermedia Intermedia - A hypertext system developed by a research group at IRIS (Brown University). , bacteria found in periodontal disease. Lactoferrin is known for its immuonoregulatory activity and anti-bacterial effect. It is also found in the saliva.

The finding was reported at the 49th annual meeting of the Japanese Society of Periodontology periodontology,
