Moria Epi-K(TM) achieves visual outcomes superior to wavefront-guided PRK and equivalent to wavefront-guided IntraLasik; Procedure addresses concerns about potential risks of ectasia with LASIK procedures.

LONDON -- At the 5th International Congress on Epi-LASIK, LASEK Noun 1. LASEK - a refractive surgery procedure that reshapes the cornea

, H. L. "Rick" Milne, MD of Columbia, South Carolina Columbia is the state capital and largest city of South Carolina. As of 2006, estimates for the population of the city proper is 122,819[1]. Columbia is the county seat of Richland County, but a small portion of the city extends into Lexington County. , presented his experience in using the Moria Epi-K(TM) to perform Advanced Surface Treatment, a variation Epi-LASIK, in which the epithelial sheet is discarded.

In a study of 100 eyes treated with the Epi-K(TM), visual recovery was significantly faster than that cited by IntraLase(TM) consultants in their clinical assessment of wavefront-guided PRK PRK photorefractive keratectomy.
Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK)
A procedure that uses an excimer laser to make modifications to the cornea and permanently correct myopia.
performed using the "Durrie Technique." Dr. Milne noted that his results were a "huge improvement" over his previous experience with PRK, in which he also used the Durrie Technique. Dr. Milne regularly checks patients' vision at five minutes post-op. Most patients see better than 20/40, and many see better than 20/20. He commented that by one month, his patients' visual acuities were virtually identical to those cited by surgeons using IntraLase(TM) in studies of wavefront-guided IntraLasik. He speculated Advanced Surface Treatment may ultimately be shown to produce superior visual outcomes to all variants of LASIK LASIK laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis.

" produced in intrastromal procedures.

Dr Milne also outlined a very effective pain management regimen that, in his view, has virtually eliminated the pain issue associated with other surface ablation procedures, such as PRK.

Dr. Milne indicated he has shifted his laser vision correction practice from 95% LASIK to 95% Advanced Surface Treatment with the Epi-K(TM). He suggested the procedure should be considered by all safety-minded surgeons concerned about the risks of ectasia with LASIK procedures. He noted that since making this change, his referrals and patient volume has grown; and his patients have been willing to trade off the immediate gratification of IntraLasik for the longer-term safety and biomechanical stability of Advanced Surface Treatment.  Meeting - also in London - numerous presentations on Epi-Lasik / Advanced Surface Treatment by speakers from all parts of the world confirmed the strong interest in and trend toward this new refractive surgery.
